Blood Transfusions Save Lives

V-E-T-S hospital maintains a blood bank of both dog and cat blood

All potential blood donors will receive an initial physical examination and blood typing performed at our hospital. This procedure will be free of charge. Those animals which are found to be suitable will then receive further blood tests including  CBC, Blood Chemistry Panel as well as a Felv/FIV or heartworm tests as indicated (also performed at no charge). Dogs will be tested for Brucella and other infectious diseases.

In turn, the owner must agree to a few basic conditions such as feeding premium quality pet food, keeping their dog or cat free of external and internal parasites. (see criteria below)

Donor Qualifications

Criteria for Cats to Donate


  1. between the ages of 2-8 years

  2. body weight greater than 9 pounds

  3. packed cell volume greater than 35%

  4. good physical condition and temperament

  5. has not received previous transfusion

  6. FELV/FIV negative

  7. indoor cat

  8. free of intestinal parasites

  9. vaccinated for rabies

  10. donor must have lived with owner for 1 year

Criteria for Dogs to Donate


  1. between the ages of 2-7

  2. body weight greater than 50 pounds

  3. packed cell volume greater than 40%

  4. has not received previous transfusion

  5. heartworm negative

  6. the right blood type to donate

  7. free of intestinal parasites

  8. vaccinated for rabies

  9. donor must have lived with owner for 1 year
